Don't eat the dirt DEQ Senior Project Manager Loren Garner said the health risks were minimal as long as people take proper precautions. Not eating the dirt is the most important. So is not inhaling dirt particles. "Unless someone really likes to eat soil or eat soil-covered things in that area, they won't be o d. exposed,"Garner said. City Public Works Director Dennis Koellermeir said that in order to be exposed to the carcinogens,a person would have to be exposed to and digest soil in the contaminated areas every day for 52 weeks. i "At that point you cross the level where it's a concern,"he said."It's low—not impossible— but low." Health risks include the heavy metals working their way into the nervous system—causing major complications such as cancer and possibly death. But Garner said he has trouble picturing people experiencing any of these effects as long as they didn't stay too long in the contaminated areas. "I don't want to poo-poo that we need to do something, but it's not an immediate threat," Garner said. http://www.portlandtribune.com/news/story.php?story_id=122132295979644000 9/15/2008 Arsenic contamination found at Tigard Library site#comment section container#comme... Page 2 of 4 Fixing the problem The city knew about the contamination when it purchased the land in 2002 to build the library.Since then, they have hired consultants to conduct three separate environmental quality surveys and removed contaminated soil on developed land.
