STAFF RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUEST
For Council to attend and participate in a training and facilitated discussion with Associate
Professor Emily Drew.
KEY FACTS AND INFORMATION SUMMARY
Emily Drew, Associate Professor of Sociology and Ethnic Studies at Willamette University
will be providing a 1.5 hour training session for Council.
Class Description:
Although census data shows Oregon's population becoming more racially diverse, the
perception persists that we are one of the whitest states in the nation. Many Oregonians value
racial diversity and the dimension and depth it adds to our lives, yet we remain largely isolated
from one another. Through this training and facilitated conversation, we will explore how
Oregon's history has shaped a specific set of challenges for our communities today,
particularly if we are to fulfill our hopes for diverse and inclusive communities. We will
examine the common barriers that inhibit inclusion and consider what leadership for racial
equity necessitates in Oregon.
OTHER ALTERNATIVES
COUNCIL OR TCDA GOALS, POLICIES, MASTER PLANS
This training will support Council's goals on enhancing two-way communication to
understand community priorities and involve the community in the decision-making
process; promote an inclusive, open-minded, and progressive community; implement
initiatives to improve city services and participation that captures the diversity of the
community; and improves equity and inclusion.
DATES OF PREVIOUS CONSIDERATION
This is the first such class that has been provided to City Council.
