Re: Number of King Studs at Openings
Dear Andy: ji Z0 •24 • O0

Per ORSC table R602.3(5) the maximum spacing of wall studs supporting one floor plus a
roof-ceiling assembly is 24" o.c. Therefore, at a 2-story condition, follow the
requirements for studs spaced at 24" o.c. at Table R602.7.5.
Header Span Number of King Studs
< or = 4' 1
8' 2
12' 3
16' 4
Please note that at portal frames, such as garage openings where headers are continuous over
opening and extend to end of wall, king studs are not used. The Perpendicular wall where the
header ends resists that out of plane load that the king studs would be resisting.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Michael K. Brown, S.E.
