From Halsted Bernard
Director of Library Services
Since the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police on May
a„ 25th, people in America and around the world have been protesting
y53 because they want an end to police brutality, systemic racism, and
the myriad of injustices and inequities that Black Americans have
suffered since our country was founded.
We have so much work to do to dismantle the institutional racism
inherent in our governmental structures. Yes, even here at the
library—especially here at the library. All work starts with words:
words that express a willingness to listen with open minds and
hearts, to educate ourselves and to sit with the discomfort we feel,
and most of all to take concrete steps to ensure that everyone feels
safe and welcome in our library. This is the commitment that I have
made to the Tigard Public Library community.
If you have any questions about this commitment, please do not
hesitate to reach out. I am still learning about racial equity, but I
believe this is the most important work that we will ever do. And I

am listening.
In health and hope,
