Where'd They Go? Room to Grow
If you've been in the nonfiction section lately, you might notice
- some large holes. We're making room for more great books so that
you don't have to break a fingernail trying to pry them out of tightly
x packed shelves. In the library biz, we call it shifting. The Oversized
Books, sometimes called Coffee Table books, have moved to the
Reference half-shelves near the public computers on the west side
of the Library.

WHO ' S THAT?

1.Why did you first apply for a job at the library? How did U.S.
libraries differ from libraries in China when you lived there?
Before I moved to the U.S., I worked at a university library in China
and I loved it. When I came to the U.S., I wanted to work at a
library.
v
The difference between U.S. libraries and the libraries in China
when I lived there? Hmm, speaking from my own experience, the
university library I used to work at was very academically focused
and exclusively served the students and faculty. There were no
story times and craft times for the kids, and no book talks and
music programs for adults like we have here at the Tigard Public
Library. I was so amazed by that when I first started working here,
and I thought, wow, you could have so much fun in a library!
i
2. Describe a memorable moment you've experienced on this
job.Why did it have an effect on you?
When I started this job, I had been in this country for less than two
years. I was very nervous about conversing with patrons and
answering the phone. My coworker, Nikky, was always there to give
me a reassuring pat on the back and encourage me. To be kind,
caring and a good team player are among many amazing things I
learned from Nikky and other coworkers. The experience was
invaluable, and I passed it on to my new coworkers and volunteers
I trained.
3. When you're not helping people at the Circ or Welcome
desks, what do you do for fun when you're "off the clock?"
I practice yoga and tai chi. A few years ago, I started doing Chinese
dance. I practice with my Chinese dance team, and we take part in

March 2020
the local Chinese community annual Chinese New Year
Celebration performance
The latest piece we did for this year was a dance called Wishes, a
tribute to Spring and the wild flower dandelion, one of Mother
Nature's simplest gifts, a humble, ubiquitous little bloom. I know
you don't want them in your lawn, but the flowers are an important
food source for pollinators—especially bees. Besides, they are a
simple pleasure for kids. Children have fun blowing on the seeds
and making wishes. https.//youtu.be/wilP-iPFEww
Again this year the Chinese community will participate in the
Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade, as we have done for
the past nine years. For a few years I was on the leaders' team and
responsible for choreographing and coaching. This year, I will be on
the team again. Hope to see you at the Parade!
