06/30/2021 - Upcoming Distracted Driving and DUII enforcement Campaigns Tigard Police Department Media Release • ' 13125 SW Hall Boulevard I Tigard,Oregon 97223 www.tigard-or.gov/police FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June30, 2021 Contact: Community Engagement Coordinator Tigard Police Department Phone: 503-718-2814 Email: Stefanie.Kouremetis@tigard-or.gov Upcoming Distracted Driving and DUII Enforcement Campaigns Kicking off the holiday weekend,Tigard Police officers will participate in two High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) traffic safety campaigns. For this effort, officers will monitor roadways and stop motorists who are driving while impaired or distracted. They also will be on the look out for other traffic violations. Alcohol impairment and distracted driving significantly contribute to traffic crashes and fatalities and accounted for 28% and 9% of all 2019 traffic fatalities in the United States, respectively. We want to remind drivers that distracted driving is anything that takes your attention away from the road whether texting, eating or talking to people on your phone or in your car.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed! We also encourage people to celebrate the fourth of July holiday responsibly. Drivers who choose to celebrate with alcohol or other substances should pick a designated driver, call a cab or make other arrangements for the safety of themselves and everyone else on the road. This special enforcement is made possible thanks to federal grant funding for overtime hours from NHTSA,which are distributed to the Oregon Department of Transportation and managed by Oregon Impact. The Tigard Police Department participates in the HVE safety campaigns as one way to make the roadways safer for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Page 1 of 1
