re: Stewart deck&stairs

You designed a new 12'x 12'deck close to ground level with stairs to an existing 2nd floor
deck. Your seven sheets of drawings are acceptable with the following notes and adjustments. I
attached one drawing showing lateral bracing for the stairs and the landing framing. My attached
notes show the basis for your deck beam size.
1.Diagonal bracing of deck floor joists is effective when one side of the deck is attached to
the house or a foundation. In this case neither the deck or the landings are attached,so the
diagonal braces are not required.
2. The tall stair&landing supports are all braced with diagonal 2x4 lumber at about 45°.
3.The lower deck needs diagonal bracing,as shown in my drawing, unless at least two of the
footings connect directly to a beam.
4.Landings can be framed with beams under the joists as shown in your drawings,or you can
use the simpler framing shown in my drawing.
5.All fasteners should be screws or ring shank nails.Regular nails tend to back out as the
wood cycles through wet and dry weather.
